Course Overview

This one-year, accredited practical course is designed to give you the skills to use horses or ponies to support clients’ development in physical, intellectual, emotional, and social health through Therapeutic Horse-Riding (TR) and Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL).

Course Aims

To teach how to design and deliver safe, effective mounted, unmounted, or blended coaching sessions for individuals and groups with a range of physical, intellectual, and emotional challenges.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the differences between therapeutic and mainstream horse-riding
  • Explain the benefits of Equine-Assisted Learning
  • Assess the right type of session for a client (TR, EAL, or both)
  • Match clients with suitable horses
  • Plan and deliver sessions with flexibility and intuition
  • Demonstrate stable management, tack care, risk assessment, record keeping
  • Work effectively with volunteers, clients, and vulnerable groups
  • Understand legal/insurance requirements and commit to professional growth

What is Therapeutic Horse-Riding?

It’s a goal-oriented intervention focusing on physical and cognitive development through the rhythmic movement of the horse. It helps improve balance, posture, and more – always led by trained staff and tailored to the individual.

What is Equine-Assisted Learning?

Includes groundwork and/or riding, offering learning experiences through grooming, leading, playing or simply interacting with the horse. Suitable for those unable or unwilling to ride.

Course Details

  • Duration: September – May
  • 220+ hours, including 22 practical days (1 per week)
  • 5 creative assignments (Assignment 1 is your application form)
  • Format: Practical + Online materials + Group Zoom sessions + Individual Support
  • Fee: €1400 (Payment plans available)

Entry Requirements

  • Confidence and competence with horses
  • Preferably 21+ years old (but flexible)
  • Commitment to 22 in-person sessions
  • Willingness to unlearn and relearn
  • Open to coaching and ongoing development
