Equine-Assisted Personal Development

Equine-assisted Personal Development (EAPD) is a powerful and fun way to nurture life-skills through interaction with horses.

It is recognised globally as a powerful and experiential tool that very quickly breaks down barriers and leads to a positive shift in limiting patterns, behaviours, or beliefs.

Working through horses to teach people about wellness, personal growth, or professional development is a unique, fun, exciting, and highly effective way to cut straight to the heart of any challenge and empower participants to find their own answers!

The focus of all the activities during the session is firmly on the horses and how they are reacting. This takes all pressure off any individual participant, which allows the facilitators to help the individual or group recognise patterns and themes, and to relate those back to real-life situations.

The sessions with horses are supported by discussions and informal conversations to create non-threatening, experiential learning opportunities for each participant.

All work is ground-based – no horse-riding involved – and clients do not need any previous experience with horses.

Equine-assisted Personal Development Facilitators are fully committed to their own ongoing personal development.

EAPD can be easily adapted to corporate training, team-building, leadership skills, strategic thinking etc.

All work is ground-based – no horse-riding involved – and no experience of horses is necessary.

Therapeutic Horse-riding

Therapeutic Horse-riding coaches have been trained to utilise the movement of the horse to provide specific physical, sensory and other benefits to the rider. They start from where your child is and gently build skills, confidence and abilities, without ever overwhelming or over-stretching your child. This is achieved by playing games, because fun must be an integral part of learning.

The games start with reaching, stretching and crossing the body and progress to include colours, shapes, numbers, letters etc.

The rider is gently encouraged to speak, give directions and answer questions. Therapeutic Horse-riding sessions can help with Fine and Gross Motor Skills, coordination, strategic thinking, problem solving, decision making, spatial awareness, sensory integration, social skills, reflexes and much more – always led by the rider’s needs, goals, interests and abilities.

While all this is happening, the horse is doing its magic. Another integral part of learning is movement. There is a growing body of research to show that movement stimulates the brain to learn better. And that’s just one of the many benefits of sitting on a moving horse.

Equine-assisted Learning

Equine-assisted Learning is a broad term that is often used to describe any learning activity involving horses. It can be a combination of groundwork and riding, or just groundwork. The intention is to create an opportunity for an enjoyable learning experience at a level appropriate to the client.

In general, EAL is ground-based. Groundwork means anything from grooming to leading to playing games or other physical activities with the horse on the ground. Sometimes it means simply spending quality time with one or more horses.

For example, grooming a horse not only builds confidence, but it provides an opportunity for the client to stretch, and to work on their balance, strength, fine and gross motor skills, organisational skills, communication/conversation, and so much more. Leading a horse provides physical exercise as well as training in assertiveness, emotional regulation, personal boundaries, communication and self-esteem.

EAL sessions can include an element of teaching, as well as coaching, as the coach utilises their knowledge of horses and horse care to help the client reach goals – confidence, physical fitness, communication etc. Sessions are designed and delivered by an experienced horse-person who knows how to create fun, appropriate, and effective learning experiences for their clients through interaction with one or more suitable horses.

EAL is good for individuals or groups who cannot ride or those who do not want to ride for any reason, as well as people who may not be candidates for Equine-assisted Personal Development.
